Ben was a chippy by trade, a father and former VFL player loved by many. Ben was a kind and loving soul who sadly lost his battle with depression. The Ben Fletcher Memorial Golf Day is run annually as an initiative to raise money for Ben’s children and continue the legacy of such a strong and loving father.
In mid-May 2024, a 60-year-old construction worker fell headfirst5.5 meters off a scaffold onto a concrete slab while performing his usual dogman duties. He underwent life-saving brain surgery and spent six weeks in a medically induced coma, followed by five months in a brain and trauma recovery unit.
Although he's slowly recovering, he’s far from his previous state. His son, also a construction worker on a casual contract, missed many workdays to stay by his father's side, resulting in a loss of income.
MATES in Construction is an integrated industry interventionprogram that:

- Partners with researchers to inform industry around best mental health practice
